Learning to control the tongue at any age is difficult to do.

When I was a young man
My best friend at the time asked
What I wanted of myself the most.

In old age — tongue control!
To get it, I couldn’t coast.

Anger must be controlled
If one will control their mouth.
Many times I’ve bitten my tongue.

But to control my words
That had to be done.

My best friend now is intuitive;
She can get right to the point.
That skill of expression I want to learn.

Not to use so many words,
When it comes my turn.

Some people can’t resist
Handing out free advice on everything.
I am working on that, too.

Too many opinions can annoy,
So free advice — I won’t do.

Do I have tongue control?
I’m old now, I’d better.
I will improve if … just say it!

Say what I want with conviction.
Then sit down and be quiet.
