As the Christmas season approaches many persons are searching for that perfect gift. To me the restoration and giving of life are on top of my list. I see these gifts in the eyes of people restored to health and parents that give birth and watch their children grow.

We simply love gifts

What about red roses

A bottle of wine

Or a sports car?

- – -

What about gifts

That come miraculously

From spontaneous healing?

- – -

What about the gift

Of being free

From breast or ovarian cancer

Through a surgeon’s hands

Who is considered to be

A miracle worker?

- – -

What about gifts

Persons thought

To be drowned

Receive through

Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation

And become alive?

- – -

These are all astounding gifts

But the gift

That always blow me away

Is the gift of life

Experienced by a couple

- – -

They both go

To the hospital’s delivery room

As the mother’s water breaks

When she’s about to give birth

There’s the medical team

To greet them

- – -

They begin coaching her

Pain envelopes her being

Which is visibly seen

On her face

- – -

She’s groaning

Her husband comforts her

She’s advised when to push

As the medical team

Keeps an eye

On her vitals

Eventually she crowns

- – -

As her doctor carefully guides

Their baby while kicking

And screaming

To our unimaginable world

He severs his umbilical cord

Cleans him off

And places him besides his mother

- – -

Both mother and father

Are joyful this Christmas Day

As a lullaby is piped

Throughout the hospital

Marking the arrival

Of their living gift

Into this exciting world

- – -

Their feelings for this child

Live on and on

All the days of their lives

Through the joys he brings them

A beautiful poem. We do not have to have material gifts to be happy at this time of year. I just love having my family around me.
