The definition of a friend is different from that of an acquaintance, and one should never be confused with the other.

An acquaintance, brief or long,
Is far from being a friend;
The two could never be alike,
Nor ever, ever blend.
How often have we heard it said
Of someone being a friend,
Which term not only might disturb,
It even might offend.
Far be it from the truth to say
That friendship is acquaintance,
Or vice versa; could a phrase
Be ever called a sentence?
An owl’s hoot or a crow’s caw
Is not the song we hear
From a cuckoo or a robin;
The difference is so clear!
A friend would always be a friend,
At all times, and, indeed,
The circumstances prove it so
When there’s a real need.
