The last note of a soldier who in the face of death found that which he failed to notice his whole life… A prayer found in the backpack of a soldier who had fallen in the battle of Monte Casino in Italy, 1944.
*
“Hear me, o Lord !
I’ve been told You don’t exist,
and I, like an idiot, believed them.
But one evening
like through a hole from an old bomb,
I saw heaven.
…
And suddenly I realized,
that I have been told a lie.
If I had taken a bit of effort
to look closely at that which You created,
I could have noticed at once,
that those, who told me this, did everything
not to tell me that a cat is a cat.
…
Isn’t it strange, that I had to
find myself in hell in order
to find the time to look You in the eyes!
…
I love you endlessly, and I want You to know that.
In a moment a terrible battle will take place.
Who knows?
Maybe I’ll arrive to You this evening.
…
Up to now we haven’t been great friends,
and that is why I fear my Lord,
whether You’ll be awaiting me at the door.
…
Look: You see me crying!
You see me as I’m falling apart!
Oh, if I met You sooner…
…
Yes, I’m coming! I must go already.
…
Isn’t it a paradox:
Now, when I’ve met You
I no longer fear death.
Until we meet!”

A prayer found in the backpack of a polish soldier,
who died in the battle of Monte Casino in Italy, 1944.

In simple words he stated his feelings, fears, his faith and the greatest discovery of his life… We don’t know what was his name. He regretted having so little time left now that he has found so much… Maybe we should use the time we have been given better… I have only translated this prayer from polish and can’t be given credit for anything else than that, D. Kaczyński.
