Poem for the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan … remembering them and their loved ones left behind!
Lord, plant the seeds of hope in Afghanistan and in Iraq
and look upon our soldiers there and bring them safely back
to their friends and relations that pray to you each day
to look upon their children in your very special way
let them conduct their duty each woman and each man
and favour our battalions in these ruined and hellbent lands
keep their hearts faithful to the God they love and understand
and don’t allow their souls to become hardened, bent and damned
if their life it ends there on that foreign rugged soil
keep a special place for them in heaven for their unwavering toil
stay next them when in battle and guide them in their fight
and stamp out persecution with honour and with might
these soldiers, most them Christian are fighting hand in hand
with ‘other’ religious soldiers in these awful foreign lands
unite them through their actions and let them understand
that we are all one people that live in one huge land
we should never be divided by religion, politics or hate
as we all have a sure appointment at the same old pearly gates
where St. Peter stands as we queue there all equal and in line
as he examines our lives and legacies in the world we left behind
so I pray dear lord keep them, guide them as you will
through these war torn countries where for some their blood will spill
tell them we will meet again on earth or up on high
and assure them that our last goodbye never meant goodbye
