There were some mistakes in this poem when I posted it before. This is the correct version. It is such a special poem and means so much to me that I had to share it in its intended form.
Standing guard on a cool, starless night.
Listening for real (and imaginary) sounds.
The silent thought crosses my mind that I try to ignore…
Will I see the dawn come?
Will I experience the pallet of colors on the morning horizon?
Or will fate come to claim me on my solitary watch?
At this thought, I bow my head and say a silent prayer.
“Lord,
If it is Your will to receive me tonight,
watch and protect my family. Let them know that I loved them
And let them know that I made the sacrifice so they would never
have to. Keep my fellow soldiers safe that they may see their
loved ones again. But, most of all, Lord, if it will keep the enemy
from harming even one more person. If my life can bring us that
much closer to peace. Then I pray You will use my life as you see
fit.”
As I finish my talk with the Almighty,
With tears in my eyes,
I rise tall and proud.
Ready to do my duty to defend my country and all of my fellow men.
