For most people, the inner circle of very close friends is usually very small. This poem speaks of that type of special friend, a true friend.
A true friend is one
Who somehow knows how you feel
Even as you struggle
To understand it yourself
Because you are
Too close to the problem
Because you are
Too involved in it
A true friend is the one
Who refuses to abandon you
And is still standing with you
With a supportive arm around you
After all the dust clears
And you look around
And you are able to see
That the crowd is gone
A true friend is that person
Who shows up to help
When you are overwhelmed
With some monumental task
And everyone else
Has something else to do
But that friend is there
To lend a helping hand
A true friend is the one
Whose voice transcends land and seas
Thousands of miles it travels
Through the phone to where you are
When you are homesick and alone
And you need to hear
Something warm and familiar
A little piece of home
A true friend is that one
Who strives to keep in touch
And who never allows
The connection to be severed
Even when the other
Gets distracted by life
And forgets or fails
To do their part
A true friend is the one
Who is bonded to the soul
And is a part of you as much
Or sometimes more
Than your own blood
The ones called relatives
The heart adopts friends
And they become family
A true friend is that person
Who is also a blessing
For many never experience
The awesomeness of this power
That binds the heart
For an entire lifetime
How wondrous and phenomenal
Is a true friend
