I love taking walks by the lake, even if I am by myself. It’s peaceful. It’s quiet, even when boats and jet ski’s are out. These walks give me the time to recouperate from what life throws my way.

as I walk by the lake
ducks and geese scramble about
to see what they can get
from the walker by the waters shore
“nothing today, my friends”
I softly tell the quacking ducks and geese
waves hit the shoreline
with a smack and a thud,
splashing up on the sidewalk
as I pass by thinking, dreaming,
immersing myself in my surroundings
boats and jet ski’s echo
and bounce across the water
as if they were alone
in the world of many
when I near the railroad tracks
a train blows its horn
to warn of its arrival
with my ears still plugged
from the trains blowing horn,
I turn around to head back home
and I wonder
where the train is heading,
where the boats and jet ski’s disappeared to,
why these ducks and geese chase people
if there is no bread to be handed out
when they meet a walker on any given path by the lake
the lake is soon hidden
behind the houses and trees
as I near my house
I open the door
and find myself
alone again
