This poem was written around the word “map”. It is somewhat about its history, but also kind of a narrative about maps and their development.
From the nights of Columbus,
To the days of Dora,
Explorers are familiar with maps.
What sights has a map seen?
How many places has a map traveled?
Holding that paper in your hands,
In search of new places or of treasure.
From the days of old,
Manifest Destiny meant so much.
Maps made their way West in the United States,
Finding new territory to call our own.
Today we worry about navigating
Through an unfamiliar town.
And now, we barely ever hold that piece of paper.
But, instead, we hold a gadget,
That tells us our directions.
Go ahead and take a journey,
Travel around the world,
Or just around home.
Hold that paper or gadget in your hand
Discover all the new places,
You’ve yet to see.
