A reflection on loss.

I look for him but he does not come.

He is not here, where we two slept,

Close in our warm togetherness.

Under cloak of dark before dawn he left to meet

An enemy unseen, unknown.

Unkind new day whose light has fallen

On the void you left beside me.

Dread envelopes the still morning sun

And I know as surely as I breathe

He will not come to me again.

I hear you say the words…dreamlike and removed

He died a hero.

Why?
