An annual problem suffered by many of us.

Image via wikipedia

Ah! We’ve been invaded

The ants are running riot.

They’re marching ‘cross the patio

And causing much disquiet.

They’re streaming through each tiny gap

And now they’ve got indoors.

They’re trailing down the window frames

And crawling ‘cross the floors.

*

They’ve climbed onto the kitchen tops

And reached the sugar bowl.

They’ve trekked in single file

As honey jar became their goal.

And even though I’d shut it tight

They’ve tried the biscuit tin,

But I made sure that this was not

One favourite food they’d win.

*

In every place I look

We’re overrun by tiny feet.

Now even in the bathroom

Where they’re on the toilet seat.

But the time has come for me

To be rid of these small guests

So I’ve spayed their trails with ant powder

To stop the little pests.

  • Kaye TM on Sep 7, 2010

wow. those creatures look fierce! i love your poem. =p

  • shivanipearl on Sep 7, 2010

But Christine don’t they remind you of the nature , i mean they invade us and by the time we are ready with remedy they disappear into their holes , to me they remind of the changing season ,the deligence, the preparedness for harder times and their group feeling. My daughter and I apply ” Laxman Rekha” as we call it here, a chemical chalk which when applied in their path makes them change their route.

  • pattiann on Sep 7, 2010

    BRAVO!!!!!! ENCORE!!!!!!!
We used to have a problem with aunts, we put a trap out and this year no problem. Now we have problems with fleas.
Good luck getting rid of your ants.
You have such a talent in poetry. I am learning to write it. Maybe one day I’ll post a poem.

  • athena goodlight on Sep 7, 2010

It’s also ant season in our place. They surely are relentless! I love the way you wrote this piece. My kids will also enjoy this. Thanks

    very interesting poem about ants!
I always give chances to ants, but they always come..

  • gaby7 on Sep 7, 2010

Army ants are perhaps the biggest invaders of homesteads and they can only be second to thieves.

  • Phoenix Montoya on Sep 7, 2010

Creepy crawlers… but we still need them lol… Good poem :)

  • Brewed Coffee on Sep 7, 2010

I don’t know how true, but if you suddenly seem to be swarmed by ants everywhere, there is a chance that your house has termites also. Better have the woodworks checked to be sure. Ants are cute, but not when they get to your food first or worst, inside your ear…ouch!

  • Milton H Peebles III on Sep 7, 2010

funny — I once live in a neighborhood infested with ants. We were told to put out powdered sulphur. Soon we were the only house on that street without ants

you can put some cayenne pepper w/peppermint essential oil & water.. and spray.. a natural way to make them go away.. & in case you have puppies… they might smell the first time.. the cayenne pepper will irritate them; but not harm them and then the puppies will learn and not smell it again.. :) ants do not like peppermint oil or cayenne pepper…

  • Jenny Heart on Sep 7, 2010

    Good luck! LOL

  • Tina Cassello on Sep 7, 2010

Even in my third floor apartment I get invaded by ants every year. When I first moved in it was large black ants but now it is the small brown ants. They have left now, at least in massive numbers. I may still find a few, but they are not all over any more.

  • heidiefernandez on Sep 7, 2010

    wow…..scary invasion…. lol

  • Goodselfme on Sep 7, 2010

  • Fornis on Sep 7, 2010

LIked the poem on ants. I am always cautious about them.

  • Val Mills on Sep 7, 2010

I can relate to this! Our son discovered a liquid ant killer the little ants love the taste of. he puts drops in their path on the fence outside his door and they take it back to their nest. They are truly master invaders.

  • cardy on Sep 7, 2010

A great poem loved the read I hope they march off soon!

  • PR Mace on Sep 7, 2010

We had an apartment in Texas while we were stationed there and we could never get rid of the ants. I hate the little beasts. You and your wonderful poems about anything and everything are so fun to read.

  • giftarist on Sep 7, 2010

An interesting write. Yeah, many of us suffer this problem. It’s like they’re in hunger strike. :)

  • Tulan on Sep 7, 2010

We are invaded once in awhile. I sprinkle salt where I see them and it kills the poor little things.

  • Anuradha Ramkumar on Sep 7, 2010

THat was a lovely poem. You can use salt to get rid of ants rather than using chemicals.

  • Poetic Enigma on Sep 8, 2010

A terrific poem, very well composed. Darn those pesky ants! Thanks for sharing (:

  • J M Lennox on Sep 8, 2010

Fabulous – although not for you with the invasion. I do love nature and all it’s creatures but have an agreement that they stay outside my home, and they will come to no harm. Of course unfortunately they often do not keep their side of the bargain, to their detriment.

  • Christine Ramsay on Sep 8, 2010

Thanks for the tips everyone. I shall have to try them out.

  • Tlchimes on Sep 8, 2010

    Cute!

  • Jimmy Shilaho on Sep 8, 2010

You have a way of turning the most mundane of things to very beautiful lines. What do I think of the ants? Where I stay, they are part of our everyday life.

  • jimbob1 on Sep 9, 2010

Christine…it is amazing how the strongest creature can be so persistent in going after and getting what they want. This was a great rhyming poem and I like it a lot. Hope the ant powder works…had to chuckle at pattiann and her trouble with “AUNTS” but they used traps and no problem this year, but she didn’t say anything about “UNCLES”!!!

  • My World on Sep 9, 2010

    Great Work.

    Thanks for share.

  • Cynthia Bartlett on Sep 9, 2010

let me know if that stuff works for you. our ants have become immune to everything we’ve used this far.

    good luck with the problem.

  • mysocalledlife on Sep 9, 2010

i really love reading your stuff, your very creative and can make a poem out of an ant invasion, how cool is that! you are an inspiration to me

  • yes me on Sep 9, 2010

A great share Christine shame you have the wee pests, cheers

  • Ruby Hawk on Sep 9, 2010

I don’t mind a few wandering in once in awhile but when they come in armies I get my salt box out.

  • CA Johnson on Sep 9, 2010

This was a great poem. I can definitely relate to it. We get ants every summer without fail.

  • Sharif Ishnin on Sep 10, 2010
