A sailor’s wife waits for her husband to return.

Sitting alone, quietly thinking of you

No one to talk to but the sun and the moon

My heart is lost somewhere beneath the sea

The deep ocean currents stirring beneath

A little piece of my soul departing with every exhale

Lonely like I’ve been a hundred times before

More restless in my stillness than yesterday

Watching as moments turn to hours

Hours transform into days and then weeks

The world is so empty at this moment in time

Waiting for the hint of familiarity on the breeze

Uniforms hang silently awaiting their owner

Neatly pressed seams display white on white

Smiling photos propped on silent shelves

Reminders of the warmth and love that lived here

My calm eyes are filled with smoky stillness

Ears straining for a vague indication of love’s sound

Skin aching for the gentleness of love’s touch

Living the life of slow yesterdays and endless tomorrows

Sitting alone, quietly thinking of you

This is so full of emotion, I particularly love the words \’more restless in my stillness\’.

Certainly, I am not alone in saying this is some skillful work.

I can see her sitting, waiting, just as women have waited for sailors to come home for centuries. It’s not the daytime hours that are the problem, it is the long slow hours in the evening.

Your poem speaks to everyone. I especially love the line…

“Living the life of slow yesterdays and endless tomorrows”

For anyone whose ever been separated from their loved one, this line says it all.

As always, excellent writing, my friend.
