About an errand at Wachovia Bank with Grandma Shirley.
His Gramma with the waxy face
spelled his name for him again:
“A-D-A-M.”
She made each letter with her mouth. “A”
Is the first letter and Adam was the
First Man. He named animals and
Tended the Earth for centuries.
She pointed at something new:
“WACHOVIA: WE KNOW.”
He looked at it. He liked
The dark, heavy “E,” like a sitting Elephant,
And the W and bloated O which looked
To him like a roan bull drinking from
A pool. He longed to take them
Into his hands and mouth and
Keep them tonight in his sleeping pen to see
How they play together.
“Listen,” she said as she began to spell:
“A LOAN TODAY, GUARANTEED.”
He saw the letters squirm. He reached for them.
