The persona reflects on the time when he became christian. The thought had come when there seemed to be general pain, even among non humans. The pains of Jesus and the love of Jesus win him over.

AN IDLE THOUGHT OF GOD

When the rains were beating, an idle thought of God into my mind

Did wander; behold my life is all behind

The air was bitter, as fully bitter as guava leaves.

The skies were black, the timorous birds flocked

Together plucking courage that unity gives.

Desperate mother hen

Cackled for her chicks washed

In the swelling torrents, optimism was all lost,

Hope brutally crushed

Then, an idle thought of

God into my mind did wander:

The thorny crown I beheld on his tortured kingly head

The strips on his horror-inspiring back,

The bitter cold after the last bread

(Oh you pity sighs!)

The heavy cross, the gasps for breath, the first,

Second, and third rest

The cockcrows, the wailing women,

 Numbed to the breast

The washing of Pilate’s hands the

Ensuing pity sighs!

The faucet of blood gushing from his painful side

Then, my heart throbbed for the king and

He whispered thus when I did abide:

Through eating the bread of adversity,

Through drinking the cup of misery

Darling, I went for you.

It’s true; it’s true, to Calvary

An idle thought of

God into my mind did wander

My erstwhile earthly life is far behind,

And behold, I live far yonder!
