A poem about finally understanding life when we grow up.
As an infant, we are taken from the world
We are locked and caged with tall wooden bars
Unable to move and unable to stand
We stare at the ceiling and play with the shadows
As time wastes away and feelings grow numb
We get taller and stronger yet weaker all the same
When we’re out of the cage, we move freely around
Only to find ourselves locked in another bigger cage
As time grows faster and we find the key
We finally get out into the world we were taken from
But the older we get, the more we understand
We weren’t locked, taken from the world
We were being protected from all of it’s cruelties
As we realize this, we find ourselves lying down
Unable to move and unable to stand
Staring at the ceiling and playing with the shadows
Soon we protect our own infant from dangers
And soon they will come to believe they are caged
But really they are saved.
