This poem tells the history of Christianity and missionaries in Ireland. It gives some interesting and true facts(except for the part about good milk from licking feet. It is told in some history books but it probably isn’t true) about Ireland’s most famous missionaries: St. Kevin, Columba, Columbanas, and St. Patrick.
From the Atlantic Ocean to the Irish Sea,
The Emerald Isle is the place for me.
In a time of peril, Ireland was free,
Here’s a bit of Irish history.
The empire was made unsecured,
By barbarians who came undisturbed.
But Christianity was preserved by Irish men,
One of whose name is St. Kevin.
Cows made good milk when they licked his feet,
But it sure does not seem like a tasty treat.
He pushed his lover off a cliff to her end,
And established a monastery for men and women.
Columba studied at a monastery,
And killed those who bothered him continually.
He was told to convert equal to his kills.
He went over that number and influences still.
Columbanas left Ireland when fifty was his age,
And failed to start a monastery, yet did not fill with rage.
He succeeded in establishing many monasteries,
And wrote poems and Biblical commentaries.
As a teen, St. Patrick was sold as a thrall,
Then he left Ireland and sailed to Gaul.
He became a missionary to Ireland, with much to say,
And we still remember him on St. Patrick’s Day.
