The sport of darts began as training in the martial arts, (well, the martial art of archery). Darts began in Medieval England. Historians surmise, because they don’t know for certain, that those teaching archery shortened some arrows and had their students throw them at the bottom of an empty wine barrel.

The game of Darts is sport of the finer arts.
For gentlemen of great skill
Stand up straight, avoid your mate
Or he’s bound to become irate
Bend the elbow, bend the knee just so
Remember to close one eye.
The arrow flies from here to there
Wayward arrow makes the barkeep glare
Another try and sure as can be
The players mate, no longer we’ll see
The game of Darts is sport of the finer arts.
