The ability of one small moment in time to change the course of life.

A single little circumstance;

Surely it’s mere happenstance;

Events that follow just by chance,

No reason to think other.

A simple nod, as eyes do meet;

An exchange of words when they greet;

Their interaction is but fleet;

A fateful introduction.

A miniscule delay in time,

Unlinks the chain on which we climb.

Secondary route is now the prime;

On path we’re now committed.

Forward look assumes direction;

Rearview mirror provides reflection,

Of choices made or their rejection,

On altered course of life.

    Oh yeah – I like this heaps. Often I reflect back and look at various things that have come to pass – a fork in the road – a decision made taking two very different directions.
    Some of them astound me really and it doesn’t really seem like I would have made the decision that I did at that time (if that makes sense)

    That final stanza is freaking brilliant.

    btw. I’ve never heard of ‘happenstance’ before :) ) I loved that bit exceedingly. I thought it was brilliant…I bit of poety licence there I think : ))

    Loved this. Fate. As George Michael sang-’Turn a different corner and we might never have met.’

    Fate indeed! There’s a wonderful rhythm (and rhyme) to this and I thought the use of happenstance was inspired, it’s one of my favourite words. Outstanding poem.
