A poem about prejudice using balloons and later it was overcome by using force.
Balloons One Day – Susan Varo 4/22/96
While floating down
The street one day
When I was on
My merry way
I bounced upon
What came real soon
Unlike myself
A red balloon
I felt real friendly
When I started to say
I’d like to play with you
If you’re going my way
The red balloon
Seemed angered with fear
So I stopped in my tracks
I could not go near
The red balloon said
Your strings as long as a kite
You don’t look like me
You’re as dark as the night
But I wanted a friend
A balloon in a troop
So I spotted some others
Together in a group
The all looked at me
Then floated away
I was so alone
And filled with dismay
The red balloon was there
And a yellow humming a tune
And said we don’t play
With a blue balloon
The sun shoned upon me
And smiled with a gleam
I asked it to tell me
Did it know what they mean
It said they are different
With them you must stop
I have seen many strings
From blue balloons popped
What do I do
I wanted a friend
I’m more than a string
There’s a balloon on one end
The sun said don’t worry
But it’s a terrible plight
The red balloon said
I’m as dark as the night
The sun told the clouds
And they blew a strong wind
On those other balloons
Who started to spin
The balloons were so frightened
They shrieked we will pop
You can play blue balloon
Honest we’ll stop
