This is a poetic paraphrase of a devotional by the late Charles Spurgeon.
It was inspired by the reading of Psalms 100, especially verse 4.
Our Father would have all his people rich in high and happy thoughts,
Especially thoughts concerning the love gifts of his blessed Son.
God is not content that disciples should think only kindly of him;
It is his pleasure that we should be delighted in Jesus as the blessed One.
We are not to seek his help only for bare necessities, like bread,
But our Father wants for us a luxurious life, beyond just being nice,
To this end he has revealed himself as the “pearl of great price”,
As the “bundle of myrrh”, like fragrance spice.
As the “rose of Sharon” with its wonderful perfume,
And as the “lily of the valley” in an awesome room.
As the Spirit helps us focus on the thoughts of Christ,
Reminding us that the glory of Jesus is beyond the skies,
Where things are measured by the standard of what survives.
Think how God esteems the only Begotten, his unspeakable gift.
Consider what the angels think of him. What a lift! It’s really neat!
As they count it their highest honor to veil their faces at his feet.
Consider what those set free from the bondage of sin think of him,
See them now in a day without night, singing a wonderful hymn.
High thoughts will enable us to act consistently in our relations with him.
The more loftily we see Christ enthroned as our own.
The more lowly we are in bowing before the foot of his throne.
And the more prepared we are to reject the rebellion of our sin.
Our Lord Jesus desires us to think well of him,
That we may submit cheerfully to his authority.
And lift high thoughts of him as we increase our love.
Love and esteem go together.
Therefore, believer, think much of your Master’s excellencies.
Study him in his primeval glory, before he took upon himself our nature!
Think of the mighty love which drew him from heaven to die upon the cross!
Admire him as he conquers all the powers of hell and loss.
See him risen, crowned, glorified and thoroughly good.
Bow before him as the Wonderful, the Counselor, the mighty God,
For only then will our your love for him be what it should.
