Cats can be so cute and cuddly, but not always.

When I was just a child

We lived in poverty.

We had rats in the back yard

And mice in the pantry.

That’s when my dear old dad

Came home from work one day,

And in his arms all nice and warm

The cutest kitten lay.

*

We named her Brigella

And she soon grew big and strong.

She was really rather fierce

And her fur was rather long.

The mice and rats soon fled in fear

Never to return again.

But that cat became my enemy

A fear which I’ve retained.

*

Brigella enjoyed the hunt

And often the corner she’d hog,

With a half chewed bird beneath her claws

And even the occasional frog.

She’d lie in wait behind the door

Jumping on me when I walked past.

She’d scratch my arms and hiss

Leaving me shivering and aghast.

*

I’ve never got over the fear,

Though most cats look really cute.

They purr and stroke up against your legs

And are often quite astute.

But whenever I see a cat approach

My heart misses a beat,

And I think back to Brigella

And make an exit quite discrete.

I was about to shut the computer off for the night (what’s left of it at 2:30 when I saw your interesting title come up.

Isn’t is amazing that a childhood fear could be so strong that it stays with you forever? Actually, I think that most of our fears come from childhood experiences.

We fed our cats, so hunting was recreational for them. Mother cats have an instinct to hunt for their babies, so we had cats come in with mice or birds to give their babies, or sometimes they would just leave an offering on the door step for us.

  • Eunice Tan on Jan 11, 2011

Cats like to play, sometimes we just have no mood to play with them.

  • Ima Vee on Jan 11, 2011

wonderful poem… We have two cats in our house and yes. They really can be frustrating sometimes because of their behavior..
But at least they help in keeping our home safe from dirty rats.
    Nice share…:D

  • crisdiwata on Jan 11, 2011

Oh! you had a mischievous cat. Child fears can hardly be forgotten.Mine was fear of dogs. I’ve been bitten by a dog when I was young that every time a dog barks and approaches me my heart beats faster though I’m still fond with dogs that is if they are my own pets otherwise i’ll think twice if I should cuddle them or runaway.

  • Ukrainian on Jan 11, 2011

Though cats are generally well-natured, some of them are really mean, and you can do nothing about that: each cat his own character.

  • J M Lennox on Jan 11, 2011

Even though I haven\’t had as bad an experience as you Christine, I can understand. As a child, a neighbours siamese once scratched me in the face when I was admiring it. Needless to say, I never trusted siamese cats after that – in fact I have never been much of a cat person anyway. I grew up with working dogs (kelpies / border collies) and a pet fox terrier.

  • Val Mills on Jan 11, 2011

I used to have a similar fear of dogs, until a huge wet doberman at the beach decided to make friends with me. Cats know who is boss, Christine!

  • Anuradha Ramkumar on Jan 11, 2011

I am afraid of dogs…I still have that fear.

  • lapasan on Jan 11, 2011

yes, cat is sometimes nice, at other times it is naughty.

  • pattiann on Jan 11, 2011

Do you ever write a bad poem? ALL your poems are fantastic.

  • Michael Eboh on Jan 11, 2011

That’s their nature indeed. Same is noticed in dogs. I prefer dog to cats. Thanks and God bless you.

  • Francois Hagnere on Jan 11, 2011

Extremely well written again. Your words are so perfect. A childhood fear can stay forever, but all of a sudden one day it disappears, with time. I love cats, sometimes they scratch and bite, just to play and I was said by a vet that it is also a friendly sign when they bite your leg, to thank you. A great poem, Christine.

  • Larry Fish on Jan 11, 2011

  • Jenny Heart on Jan 11, 2011

Our cats thank God have great gentle personalities. Great poem!

  • Betty Carew on Jan 11, 2011

Christine, you have a way with your poems of taking me there. Wonderful write. It takes very little to scare a child and leave them with a lifetime of fear. You describe this perfectly.

  • webseowriters on Jan 11, 2011

    A cool share indeed

  • clay hurtubise on Jan 11, 2011

lol, the cat was playing with you!
Maybe it is time to get a kitten!
I was attacked by dogs as a child, but now have four.
don’t let the bad experience of childhood diminish the potential for a wonderful adult experience.
    Good post.
    Thanks,
    Clay

  • Jimmy Shilaho on Jan 11, 2011

I will look for the term that describes your phobia for cats.

  • CHAN LEE PENG on Jan 11, 2011

Dogs and cats are normally not to be feared. But, if they are straying cats and dogs they just behave wild and may chase away many people.

  • Starpisces on Jan 11, 2011

I like the way you wrote poems, Christine. This one is so well written, rhymes well, story told clearly.
I also afraid of real cats, though I love cats cartoons.
once I was disturbed by a cat which was under the table when I was eating my lunch, I tried to lift up my legs, and know what, I got a cramp suddenly (which area cramped, you guess? yes, the bum).

  • Stable on Jan 11, 2011

Another great poem Christine, thoroughly enjoyed it. I quite like Clay\’s idea above, about getting a kitten. Or perhaps youre more of a dog person?

  • sunsetsunrise on Jan 11, 2011

I like Brigella. I like her attitude. And I like the poem, too.

  • Freethinking on Jan 11, 2011

You present a funny, realistic view of many cats. I love the way you phrased this piece. I had a friend who had a cat that would lay on their open stairway and swat me in the head whenever I walked underneath. That cat just gave me the creeps.

  • PR Mace on Jan 11, 2011

Well, I have never been a cat person and now I really now why. Good poem. You know I love your work.

  • PR Mace on Jan 11, 2011

Sorry, me again. My daughter has three cats and her white cat Penny has a thing for my curly hair. I will sit on her couch and Penny will jump in my hair. See why I don\\\’t have cats. I will just keep my dogs.

  • jimbob1 on Jan 11, 2011

CR…Although we had a nice cat once…I am not a fan of felines…they are like too many people…fine weather friends – friendly when it suits them but can’t be bothered with you the rest of the time…unlike a dog which displays unconditional love and loyalty…I like this poem and voted to say so…thanks for sharing and take care…

  • LadyElena on Jan 11, 2011

Aaawh, its a pity you didnt bond with her
Brigella is a nice and unique name for a Cat.

You noted she was fierce. So, maybe as we have girls that are Tom boys, Brigella must have been a Tom Cat. lol.

  • Adrn0919 on Jan 11, 2011

As a teenager to young adulthood we had a cat. She loved us, once the grandchildren came around she started stalking them. It was funny and sad at the same time. The little ones were terrified each time they went to grandma’s house. I understand completely. Good poem.

  • F J McCarthy on Jan 11, 2011

Nicely written piece and how so true in your words.I am now allergic to cats but at one time used to have them. But it was like my cat had a Dr.Jeckle/Mr.Hyde syndrome and can understand where you are coming from. When she died I never got another cat and moved where I cant have any.Great poem though and made me think about my now missing feline.

  • Christine Ramsay on Jan 12, 2011

Wow! Thank you everyone. I didn’t realise my cat would appeal to so many. I must add that we moved often in those days and we tried leaving her behind each time, but amazingly she was always at the new house when we arrived. We never knew how she did it.
    Thanks again.

  • papaleng on Jan 12, 2011

  • T. S. Lewis on Jan 12, 2011

Felines can do that do you.

  • Brewed Coffee on Jan 12, 2011

Cats are really naughty and too playful at times that they scare kids. Our cat did that to my sister when we were still kids and I heard her screaming as our cat cornered her behind the door. It was a funny site but scary for her I\’m sure. Your fear of cats is the same as my fear of dogs. My heart starts to pound when I see one on the streets. I feel safer when I have an umbrella that I can use as a weapon against dogs LOL! :-)

  • CA Johnson on Jan 14, 2011

I enjoyed your poem. It reminded me of how I used to feel about dogs. I still do not like big dogs, but I can be around small dogs.

  • yes me on Jan 15, 2011

I’m not a cat person either Christine… my other half is, my first visit to meet her kids, and cat was quite memorable [ just let her get to know you ] well there I was with Cassy the cat sat staring at me on my lap… [ just give her a wee tickle at the back of her ear, there I was face to face with the moggy my heart going ten to the the hundred finger heading for her left ear, [ mwangrrr she lurched teeth just like in your photo] I leap up Cassy the cat takes to the air [ awe poor cassy she wasn't going to bite you] no say’s I she was going to kiss me eh… ha ha ha hence Cassy lives with the kids, and I still don’t have a dog.
    like this one Christine cheers

  • M J katz on Jan 15, 2011

I’m so sorry you had such a bad experience with cats, Christine. I feel that way about Dobermans because of a childhood incident.
Cats definitely have their own personalities, too! While SpiceGirl is such a lovebug, Noodleman prefers to be patted and scratched on his own terms. He can certainly drive me nuts at times with his opinionated attitude! :)

  • coffeeadict on Jan 19, 2011

Lovely. I don’t like cats too much – had a bad experience in the past as well. It finally ran away.

  • mark ramsay on Jan 20, 2011
