I awoke to thunder
And the sound of falling rain;
To the fairly certain knowledge
Track and field day was rained out (again!).
While I was in the shower,
The world got a shower, too;
I quickly check my computer
As the thunder distant grew.
My umbrella and my jacket
Are on the front seat of the truck.
It’s magnificent spring weather–
If you happen to be a duck!
Shoes and socks in my hand,
To the truck I wade.

It’s May first, last day of bookfair,
Vacation’s on its way!
Only three more weeks of school,
Three weeks till time enough to write and read
Time enough to spring clean my house,
Time enough to sleep all I need.
But I’ve still got a Friday
I’m having to go through,
With forms, and chores and classes
A million things to do…
When finally I’m finished
With this busy, crazy, silly day,
With bookfair, grades and lessons done,
I’m finally on my way…
Much to my consternation,
Hail is falling from the sky,
Morning was just a gentle sprinkle
Compared to the storm that’s passing by!
Safe home at last Without mishap
And boy am I glad,
To be in my friendly, messy study
After the May Day I have had!
