A poem inspired by the anger of an old soldier, angry at the lies and incompetence of an officer when serving in Northern Ireland.
BECAUSE WE PROMISED
I gathered the guns
Mine and my friend’s
He’d died in my arms
I was out for revenge
So I made a Promise
A promise
The road into town was long
The Sarge gave me a spliff
So the red rage subsided
I was a British soldier
I was law I would be justice
I made a Promise
A promise
The road to the city was long
The Officer had blamed us
For all his incompetence
They would cover his fall from grace
We were the stain on the old school tie
So we made a promise
An Oath of blood
The road to the city was long
We played their game
Went were they sent us
As all British Soldier’s
We were law and were Justice
We’d made a promise
An oath with our blood
The road to the city’s not so long
We took out the liars
We made them all sweat
And they paid the price
For their incompetence
We’d made a promise
An oath with our blood
The road to the city is closer
We kept our promise
To all those who’d fallen
That road to the city
Took a lifetime to walk
A promise, an oath,
We kept them all
