A numbered series that tells a story of a woman evaluating her life thus far in order to step forward into her future.

This is a story of a Hawaiian woman, named Haalii (ha-a-lee-ee). Haalii is nearing her 50th birthday and has been spending much of her time replaying the scenes of her past, trying to fit the complex pieces into some kind of sensible arrangement. She struggles with secrets, regrets, guilt and shame for the choices she has made of which holds her prisoner, punishing her spirit.

Haalii goes back to her earliest memory of her existence. It was 1964 on the island of Kauai, Haalii was just 3 years old then. Her first memory of herself was holding her grandmother’s hand as they stood before her great-grandmother’s casket. For Haalii, life begins at her great-grandmother’s funeral, with no recollection of anyone or anything before that day.

That is interesting. I guess a tragic event like that is powerful enough to be a starting point in a child’s memory.
