A poem about a girl with anorexia.
This skinny girl you see today
The memory that did fade away
She peers through the looking glass
And knows her future’s come to pass
Her eyes glaze over as she stares
Her bare reflection – no one cares
She sees a whale stare back at her
She doesn’t know – the truths a blur
One step forward, two steps back
The world around her turning black
She reaches out to touch the light
But there’s nothing left in sight
She latches onto something small
Her last chance to stop the fall
Welcome arms draw her in
Her new friend wants to make her thin
Then she whispers in her ear:
‘Stay with me, you’ve nothing to fear’
The friends grow close, their bonds grow stronger
But the girl can’t go much longer
The voice inside her tells her no
That the fat has got to go
The girl believes her new found friend
And her body she tries to mend
She tries so hard to lose the weight
And it’s falling at an alarming rate
Her friends around her start to cry
They can see her start to die
She looks at them with such despair
Now she’s living just on air
The voice is getting stronger now
‘Move along you stupid cow’
She’s like a feather – light and pale
But she can’t believe the scale
‘You’re too fat, see those numbers rise
Must try harder, you’re whale size’
She can’t believe what she’s been told
She always seems to feel so cold
Her body’s weak and her limbs are numb
But she won’t even eat a crumb
All she hears is Ana’s voice
And she knows she has no choice
‘you’re too fat you must lose weight
Don’t you slouch, sit up straight’
Now the girl can take no more
Her soul is darkened down to the core
She knows she needs to stop her purges
But she cannot fight these urges
Then one sunny afternoon
Her mind and body start to swoon
Her chest starts rising up and down
All her friends, they start to frown
The girl, she falls and lies so still
As her body turns so chilled
Sirens sound from far away
She has gone, but Ana’s here to stay.
