An intimate look inside the life of someone homeless.

Being homeless can happen to any man, and because of my story I know that it can.  Lost without shelter and nowhere to go, my daily struggle is the only thing I know.  I lost my job then my home went next.  Things went bad so quickly, I thought I was hexed.  When you look in my eyes, please don’t see a bum; just see the worst that my life has become. I only wish I knew how to get back on my feet, my life is so bleak that I feel the defeat. It’s hard to be hopeful when you’ve lost all you’ve had.  Today inside I only feel sad. I survive on handouts, as the people pass me by. I smile thank you while inside I cry.  I’ve heard that brighter days are coming, and I hope that will be, because right now being homeless is all that I see.  Opportunities pass because of economic lost; can’t even build on the skills that I have been taught.  My clothes are tattered and worn straight through, no longer providing warmth, not even my shoes.  I huddled up so tight, trying to keep myself warm, no space in the shelter living type dorms.  The weather is threatening to be really bad; a plastic bag to cover me is all that I had.  But I’m not discouraged and I look straight ahead, tomorrow might be the chance to secure me a bed.  So today when I arise and look all around, I hope a warm bed is there to be found. I’m down on my luck and this thing is true, remember my story could easily happen to you.

It can happen to anybody who loses a job. I see it every day.

  • Trinket on Jul 4, 2010

This is very well written. I have been homeless before and I can relate to this poem very well. It is sad to see people out there making their own assumptions of people that do not have it very well. You never know what path you might cross in your life. So it is best to try and just help in any way you can. You don\’t know, maybe one day you will need that favor returned to you some day.

Ain’t this the bare naked truth. Even with a good job things can pull the rug right out from under you without the least little warning.
    This poem is tres beaucoup!

Its tough for sure.. people should not judge others… One of the smartest things I ever did was buy a house – making a big down payment so that my mortgage was cheaper than rent, as such even if things got bad I was always better off than somebody renting a place because I had invested in myself and my mortage was totally affordable.

  • Payge on Jul 4, 2010

Has never been homeless in the story you described but its been close. It could happen to anyone at any time considering our economy. In this case you cant always judge a book by its cover because they to once had what you may now have.

Momma T…If there were Academy Awards for poetry you would be holding an Oscar right now…this is a spectacular, tug at the heartstrings kind of masterpiece…which reminds us of “There but for the grace of God go I…”Triond needs to implement a different level of indicating the degree to which a person appreciates a submission…to simply say I Like It seems so insignificant…but that is all I could do so I did it…thanks for the enlightenment…

  • LoveDoctor on Jul 5, 2010

A very honest piece. We should never take life for granted and count our blessings every day. I nominate you for an Oscar terry!

More awareness needs to be given to the homeless, however it seems we just accept it and move on and do nothing. There was a dark time in my past when I was homeless in California and too embarrassed to ask for help because I didn’t want to tarnish the bright image that my family had of me especially being a preacher’s kid…Praise God that only lasted a month but I gained valuable insight on the worth of a person, and learned a lot about myself…I use to feel good before my crash to give money to homeless person and felt I did my job, but what I realized was that it was more for my gratification to brag that I could and I lacked the compassion that should have accompanied the giving. I learned good survival skills and more empathy for my fellow man. I even learned that personal possession aren’t that important if you lose your life…those things can be replaced…When I felt like I couldn’t go on I called an old employer and friend and he paid for me a plane ticket back to Maryland, and if you could only know how crushing emotionally that was too my spirit you may can relate to story..This was a period of escaping an abusive stalker and losing all that I had while still trying to save face…So you can judge me or turn away but “Thank God” I’m still here because the complete story hasn’t been told but I’ll take my knowledge and share and expose my wounds if it only but help one person to continue and not give up!!!

This piece is so lovely and so sad, you have captured the feelings of one who is homeless and I beg God to put a stop to all the madness too many of us are faced with.

Many years ago I made the same investment that B made because I didn’t know I’d ever be able to do it again and seeing how things are today, I probably wouldn’t have.

Keep up the beautiful work, my precious one!

  • Poo in Love on Jul 5, 2010

I definitely do not want to be in that position … nobody does … but like you said, it can happen to anyone, anytime :-(

  • nutmegeyes on Jul 5, 2010

Oh my wonderful friend you’ve shared a most intimate detail of your life and how courageous of you to do so…this situation of homelessness is globally a sad situation and I hope I never have to live that lifestyle because I don’t know if I’m strong enough. Thanks for the sad remember and the encouragement that I took from this depiction of homelessness to reach out of myself and be more giving to others so that when my blessings goes out then maybe my blessings will return…. Awesome entry.

This is a touching story. Homelessness can happen to anyone so we need to do what we can to help people in need. You never know when it can happen to you.

  • Tulan on Jul 5, 2010

Homelessness is a problem here. It seems so hopeless with so much need all around us.

16% of the homeless population are suffering from mental illness keeping most of them from ever being able to be on their feet. But I don’t think that this is exactly the type of homelessness this post is talking about. I a personal note, I have been in this situation, I don’t think it’s anything to be pitied for, it just sucks. You know?

The statistics people say that many are only 2 paychecks away from being homeless. This is a sad situation, when hardworking people lose all they have.

  • Louise Silver on Oct 8, 2010

That’s a lovely poem and well observed. I went to the theatre last night, in Manchester, England and while in the taxi taking us there, we stopped at traffic lights. And there sat on the pavement were 3 homeless men. Laughing and joking, each drinking a can of cider, whilst begging for money. I looked at them and thought, people will judge them as they pass in the street but there will be more to their story than we can ever know. It could reach back as far as childhood as to how they’d reached this point in their life. I’ve learnt NEVER to judge, we can never know what’s round the corner for us.

This is sad, but so true. My friend has a ministry to homeless people. There are lots of homeless veterans in our area, some sleep under bridges in the winter time. My friend and I went to some shelters to see if we could get help to bring them in out of the cold– I’m talking about freezing temperatures– but guess what, some of them refused the warm shelters because they were alcoholics and were not allowed to bring their alcohol into the shelters. We felt bad for them; but there was nothing we could do for them because they refused the help.

However, most of them did come into the shelters and receive help. Some of them were able to get jobs and move into their own apartments. Thank God!

When you look in my eyes, please don’t see me as a bum. Just see the worst that my life has become. Powerful, beautiful and true. A voice for the homeless in those words.
