Jacob sat down to eat lunch with his friends,
He sat with them by the shady oak tree.
He faked a smile, and nibbled his food,
But deep on the inside he wanted to cry.

He glanced at his best friend of many years,
Rachel was the prettiest girl in school.
She forgot about Jacob a lot, it seemed.
She was always flirting with a ‘cool guy’ named Robbie.

Jacob wondered why Rachel neglected him,
He was nice to her and stood by her side.
When times were rough, Jacob was always there.
But Rachel only cared for Robbie’s blond hair.

Jacob had always loved Rachel, from the very start.
But Rachel liked Robbie, and Jacob felt lonely.
Robbie wasn’t nice to Rachel, like he was.
He didn’t understand how he won Rachel’s heart.

Jacob had read in many books that nice guys finish last.
He came to the cruel realisation that this was true.
He didn’t understand why society would function like that,
But he would not change his ways, but keep being a good friend.
