My granddaughter and I took a walk to the creek on a hot March day and this is the story of our high adventure.

We strolled to Sope Creek on a hot March day
It was eighty degrees in the coolest shade
Sarah climbed on down the wooded bank
Threw in some sticks that mostly sank
Found a fallen tree across the creek
Would have walked that sucker but golly gee
It still was the middle of a winter day
Even at eighty degrees in the shade

Sarah climbed the rocks down to the stream
The mica glowed sparkled and gleamed
The shiniest rocks she laid aside
For her rock collection on Sunset Drive
Roots spiraled our from under the trees
Twisting and curling into the creek
Sarah suddenly cried out in surprise
Big Fat Spiders and Snakes alive!!!

She hurried away with an about face flank
To where I stood at the top of the bank
Come on Grandmother, Come and see
That snake was staring straight at me
He thought I would taste good to bite
That little gray snake gave me a fright
Sure enough that snake stretched on a root
All smooth and gray, sleek and cool

Sarah tossed a stick to give him a nudge
That little gray snake didn’t even budge
We said good-bye and Sarah hummed him a song
It was four o’clock and we had to go home
That is how we spent a hot March day
When it was eighty degrees in the coolest shade

    Hi, Ruby,

Really enjoyed this poem…put a huge grin on my face. Reminds me of childhood years-that and nature walks.

Nice line, “When it was eighty degrees in the coolest shade”. I love that!

Can’t quite express why, but it truly has a unique voice to it…

    Excellent work; see you around!

    Hi Ruby,

I love these types of excursions, except I am deathly afraid of snakes.

80° in the shade in March? We still have snow until April most years. My sister was born April 24 during a blizzard.

    oh! what an adventure

  • Fornis on Mar 14, 2009

Nice adventure. You are referring to 80 degree Fahrenheit. Isn’t it? You still follow Fahrenheit instead of Celsius.
I liked the mix of adventure with a poetic narration.. It makes an interesting reading.
