Photos taken by the author at the 2009 mini-monster radio controlled model airplane fly-in at Lake Wales, Florida. Some models were 16 feet long with wingspans of 22 feet and airspeeds reaching 200 mph. Not your little brother’s model airplanes. The poem reflects my views towards these great birds.

Male babies grow up to be boys
And boys get to play with toys.
Then boys grow up to be men.
A wonderful thing happens then.
Like moths from a sleeping cocoon
They change like the times of the moon
And simply become bigger boys
With bigger and higher priced toys.

I wonder why you had the super constellation in the foreground. I knew you must be mesmerizing about your first and only airplane ride, lol. Nice one, Ken…The Cessna 172 (taxiway) was just twice the horsepower of the Cessna 150 where I’m rated to fly years ago.

In the first photo I recognized a P51, a P38 and a jet that may have been a Super Saber. Yes, as a kid I loved my model airplanes. I liked the poem, too.

Oh, and The Spirit of St. Louis.

My father in-law before he passed away in the early 80’s was a huge contributor the the RC airplane club in southern California. They even had an annual memorial award for the top builder/flyer called the George Gibson award. I enjoyed reading your peom. Thanks for sharing.

    Truly said.

lol when you say “not your baby brothers” model airplanes, I have to say “Oh yes they are” because my brother (4 years younger) builds and flies this kind of plane (and he has the regular model ones too). Pretty cool stuff really. I believe he even builds them for others who just want to fly them but not build

I love planes and cars. Unfortunately, all I can tell you is I like it and what I like about it. I don’t know makes, models, performance or speed. I just know what I like and think I know what I need. lol

Wonderfully expressed, a restlessness until you make it big.

You’re so right about boys and their toys. I have a big little boy I am married to and he loves his computer toys. Great article and the photos made the piece.
