A haunting poem about a woman who learns of the death of her brothers by someone bringing her a bundle of black feathers in silk. I’m trying to write 31 poems this month associated with Halloween, haunting and horror. This is the 9th one so far.

Black Feathers

8 Oct 2011

Black feathers everywhere
How do I know that death is not near
I have a bad feeling
That nothing is clear

Black feathers on my bed
How do I know that I soon won’t be dead
I have a bad feeling
That it’s all in my head

Black feather
Lost in heathers
Battle so weary
The day is dreary

Black feathers
All for my brothers
Never come home again
Taken by an evil dark sin

Black feathers wrapped in silk
How do I trust those that brought this ilk
I have a bad feeling
There is death in my milk

Black feathers everywhere
How do I take my life elsewhere
I have a bad feeling
That death is out there
