Blond and blue eyed inquired of the black guys
Looking them fully in their eyes
Whether he could come up to play
Being new to the neighborhood that day
But they winced and had angry thoughts certain to send him away
They spoke to him of discrimination, slavery, lynches
And stalked back and forth with angry fist-ed clenches
Saying, Now you know why you can’t play
And what do you dare to say?
Blond and blue eyed calmly replied
In a voice that sought not to be denied
Your charges are an ill fit
Cause it certainly wasn’t me that did it
All those old men are dead
And your mind flowth over with their ghost in your heads
You never yourself was a slave
Never picked cotton for your own life to save
I never placed on you a chain
There is no need to complain
And I’m certainly not the blame
Then Blond and blue eyed inquired of the black guys
Looking them fully in their eyes
Whether he could come up to play
Being new to the neighborhood that day
And they winced and had clearer thoughts
Then invited him in right away
