This is a poem I wrote after a walk in the woods with a pale sickly moon shining through the branches of old wavering trees. I had the eeriest feeling of being surrounded by ghostly beings. Dancing shadows hovered over me, whispering sounds mummered in the night. I had the frightening feeling that something strange was in the air.
Today we wandered through the hills
and met a stranger walking there
Head thrown back and eyes closed
He was a figment we had dreamed
when we were children he explained
Heedless we did not despair
At eventide the flowing trail
was ripe with shadows on the wall
There were secrets we could tell
if only we had known it all
The shadows reached and lurched about
The dogs were barking madly
The night abashed closed its gates
The trees leaned over simpering
In anger they would quickly rise
against any wind that passed them
Only to be still again listening quiet intently
We stumbled down the darkened trail
with bones of old trees snapping
Moon crazed bats grazed our hair
Goblins floated by
and down the hollow
in the Druids glade
The headless horseman rides
