For the first time many middle class Americans are experiencing the vicissitudes
of life.

Most of us are middle class

We’re not concerned about

The everyday vicissitudes

Of life, like what we should eat

Wear, drink, or spend

We’ve simply learn to live

Within our means

Many of us have been fortunate

To have had a college education

We can stretch a dollar

Look for bargains and enjoy

What we consider the good life

But just for one minute imagine

If you did not have such opportunities

Worked at a low paying job

Had no insurance

Did not know where your next meal

Was coming from

You never were taught

About how to stretch a dollar

Never had any role models to speak of

Were from a broken home

With young children to care for

How would your life be?

Some former middle class Americans

Are experiencing

These things at this present time

Because of the remnants of the recession

The sad thing is that they have tried to do

All the right things they were taught

And still find themselves unemployed

Their home foreclosed and without insurance

With their hopes dashed

What else can they do?
