BOUNTIFUL OCTOBER
The hot, humid days of summer,
how fast they passed away
and time drifted to September
and slipped past Labor Day
and sped on to October,
days of bounty filled with grace
and the glory that is autumn
quickly moved into place
gowned in gold, ruby and amethyst
with the changing of the leaves
from summer green to autumn gems
that begin falling from the trees
on the golden fields of harvest
beneath cerulean skies,
orchards now heavy with their fruit,
sweet bounty for the eyes
while birds gather up in yammering flocks…
And soon the geese will fly
south from beautiful New England…
Oh these sweet days to remember
before the frost and oft gray days
that will come by mid-November;
soon winter’s chill snows will come to stay
for a season in New England;
But for now our land is richly blest
with warm days and radiant color,
days of sun and rain and teasing wind
days of raking leaves and hiking hills,
valleys, fields and gore,
and storing up the blessings
of the sweet days October.
It’s a season filled with bounty,
such are the days of October,
delightful days of splendor
that too quickly are over…
Days gowned in gold, ruby and amethyst
with the changing of the leaves
from summer green to autumn gems
too soon falling from the trees
on the golden fields of harvest
beneath cerulean skies;
orchards now heavy with their fruit,
are sweet bounty for the tongue and eyes.
Oh sweet, bountiful October,
frosty nights, warm, perfect days
mixed with both rain and sunshine
that too quickly fades away
to November and the days of sticks…
but oh the pleasure of the blessings
we are given before it’s over…
and the memories will linger on
of bountiful October.
