Written during the first year of dating my now husband of almost two years. I still feel the same way about him because nothing’s changed – he’s remained as attentive as when we met and I grow in appreciation for him every day.
You do please me
—more than you probably know.
Hearing your voice
beside me on your pillow
into the night
and as I rise
in the morning.
Looking into your eyes
or watching
your lips move as you talk
while you drive.
The way you make me laugh
when you are actually
downright serious about something;
the way you squeeze my hand
when something sweet
is sung on the radio.
Your ability to hear
what I’m not always
able to say,
the way you soothe
my nervous conversation
when my emotions
get the better of me.
The way you guide me
gentle-handedly
over snow, ice or
tricky terrain—
the way you stand waiting
until my feet
are tucked safely in
before shutting the car door.
The way you hold your gaze
upon me sometimes
making sure I hear
the deep language
within your eyes.
The way you fold your hands
over your heart
like a man pending trial
hoping my storm clouds
blow over soon
and how my own ghosts, demons and shadows
bow in reverance and obediance
as you silently walk
into the room.
The way I know
that to ask anything
more of you
would be utter greediness
for all the heart and soul
you already offer
on bended knee
for me….
…Don’t ever think
you do not please me,
in every way
you are everything I need.
You are the reward
I look forward to achieving,
you are the resolved peace
I’ve finally found
after a long lived-out war.
Back to the warmth of your love
the touch of your skin
the strength of your shoulder
and the pleasure
all of you brings…..
