As temperatures plummet once again and more snow falls, Britain just doesn’t seem able to cope.

*

Britain’s in the grip of another freeze

And life has almost at a stop.

The ice and the snow

And the temperatures low

Could mean Christmas being given the chop.

*

The railways and roads are covered in ice

And so many dangers do lurk.

Within airport doors,

Bodies litter the floors

As travellers find their journeys hard work.

*

I feel so sorry for those who are stranded

And want to reach home before Christmas Day.

As their families await

To find out their fate,

It could mean spending the holiday away.

*

Christmas shoppers have decided to stay home

In many of our cities and towns.

Businesses in despair

Are becoming aware

That this year’s takings will definitely be down.

*

What has happened to the British climate?

It’s the coldest it’s ever been.

Now we have all had enough

Of life being so tough.

Snow’s no longer a beautiful scene.

*

    tremendous poetic weather up-date…sorry

  • papaleng on Dec 20, 2010

You vividly described the weather down in your place. I guess global warming has to be blamed…

  • Suni51 on Dec 20, 2010

When it snows, its fun for some but those who experience and brave it only they know what’s it like. I have experienced it many a times, initially it’s fun but after spending a few days seeing nothing but snow and fingers of the feet feeling like very chilly and biting, that’s a different experience altogether. When I was a child my father got him transfered from one such hill station due to this sort of conditions.

Christine, I was watching the news earlier, interviewing the plight of a whole pile of NZers who are stranded at Heathrow and running out of money poor things. Apparently the food at the airport is incredibly expensive. Good update here from you :-)

Another vivid and well versed reminder of how, as humans, we are at the mercy of nature.

  • lapasan on Dec 20, 2010

I sympathize with you for the situation in your place. Global warming has probably taken its toll on our erratic weather.

  • JoeLopy on Dec 20, 2010

Well, Christine we are in the same boat here. I hope things are going to be better in a few days time…………I am freezing cold! Take a good care of yourself and your hubbie.

  • Betty Carew on Dec 20, 2010

Wonderful poem Christine. The weather is changing drastically everywhere. In Newfoundland where we are usually under a blanket of snow by this time of year but instead we are experiencing five days of rain with the temp hanging around plus five. Every year our winters that once were harsh are getting milder. Great write Christine. I love your poems and truly look forward to them.

I loved the snow until this year! The whole country has almost grind to a hault because of the snow. Would help if the councils would grit the roads and footpaths!!!!

  • Anuradha Ramkumar on Dec 20, 2010

A friend of mine is stranded in the airport with his family coz of this snow…

  • Bloom Again on Dec 20, 2010

Just looking at the thermometer is making my teeth rattle! I am finding this year that I just cannot tolerate the cold. I dread going out and am really limiting my activities. The fact that I do not drive does not help.

Global warming caused by the industrial age and all the conveniences of modern society is causing crazy weather all over. The scary thought is, this is just the tip of the iceberg. There is a scripture in the Bible, Psalm 147:17 He casts forth his ice like morsels: who can stand before his cold?

Make the best of it and enjoy lots of hot beverages and cuddles with hubby. Thank God you are home. My heart and prayers go out to those who are trying to reach family for the holidays.

  • Glynis Smy on Dec 20, 2010

Well said. I returned last week from the UK. I landed in snow and it was a shock. I am so pleased it was not this week! Brrr

I saw this on the news this morning. What is with our weather. Tomorrow is the first day of winter but we have already at least 10 nights with below freezing temps. I am going to bed soon under my warm electric blanket. Stay safe and warm.

  • Lady Fantasy on Dec 21, 2010

There is a thing of having just enough snow and the acceptable temperature. Then there is another thing of having to much snow and even colder temperatures. You did a fantastic job of describing what Father Winter can do and drastically mess with daily lives when he wants to.Try to stay warm, safe and enjoy the upcoming holidays the best way you can.

  • LoveDoctor on Dec 21, 2010

Hope the snow and cold weather clears up just in time for the Christmas holidays. Sounds like a pretty bad one this year.
    Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

  • gaby7 on Dec 21, 2010

God was very intelligent to take the cold away from Africa where folks wallop in poverty. I doubt whether we could have survived such extreme whether conditions without personal resources such as the expensive heavy clothings. Most rural folks do not even have electricity and many still live in grass thatched houses-I imagine snow would just pile on such structures and break them down killing all the poor dwellers inside. As you cry of these extreme whether conditions, here in Uganda, folks are braving mean temperatures as high as 35 degrees centigrade each and everyday!

  • Ruby Hawk on Dec 21, 2010

Christine, stay in and be warm. I thought we were having cold weather but thankfully not near as bad as yours. We had icy roads last week and the temp was lower than it had been since the 1700’s I believe the weather man said, anyway back a long way. It has warmed up a bit.

  • Yovita Siswati on Dec 22, 2010

  • 1hopefulman on Dec 28, 2010

As I look at the thermometer showing minus 9 degrees C, I’m still thankful that we can put some extra layers of clothing and still venture out. Sorry that you’ve gotten so much snow this year. But as mankind keeps ruining the ecosystems of the earth, we can only expect things to get worse.
