This is a poem remembering what had happened last year, 2009. As a daughter, it answered the questions, what did I do to make my family happen and what did I do that made them sad. As a student, what were the techniques I used to maintain my high grades and cope with the pressure of being a valedictorian and full pledge scholar? As a citizen of my country, what did I felt when some of my brothers and sisters were in grief and mourning about losing their families in Maguindanao massacre? All these a expressed and answered in a figuratively dense poem, entitled Brought Back to Life.

Medusa’s descendants bit my plans and stoned my power,

Good girl from Toril punched Lam-ang as a winning loser.

A full-pledged scholar aiming for a GPA of more than 1.70,

Don’t be deceived, I broke rules for fiestas and birthday party.

See! What the venom of leisure and adventure had done to me!

Even the raininess of September 15th to sail Samal’s Fiesta didn’t stop me.

Severe addiction to grieving happiness, only to my classmates’ beehive,

It’s like being addicted to Dionisia and Santino’s charismatic high five.

An agent of fine cookery”, that’s my drama to my loving family,

December 25th was an ultimate test, fried chicken at its best!

Cleaning my bat cave designed and stumbled by Ondoy,

Hades’ sharp scythe ended my inner, messy cowboy.

Right sitter of Divine Majesty in Heaven could have been proud,

Nine mornings called, I listened and replied to his deafening sound.

Eternal flame had burned the nation down to its feet,

Ondoy, Pepeng and Maguindanao massacre marked a victorious defeat.

Alert! Alert! Election is about ready,

Babel’s tower is now burning its fury.

Christ have mercy, Big Utol is opening the box of Pandora,

Devils of Herod may appear and dance to the tune of cha-cha.

I’m a young Filipina who thanked Andal Ampatuan’s  horror novel,

Because in him I found the true definition of the word “evil”.
