A poem debating the end of a life, and the feelings it creates regarding cremation versus burial…

Bury Me not…….

Bury me not in the deep, damp earth.

It shall not have me in death, it did not give me in birth.

No, not deep down, where the soil lies deep,

where other bones rot, in their endless sleep.

Where the dark is a tunnel, that continues to blend,

a timeless illusion, that has yet no end.

I do not need a casket, my body to keep.

I do not need a graveside, where loved ones will weep,

and freshen the flowers, that drop petals around,

a sacred reminder, to a corpse in the ground.

Instead, let the fire consume me, let the flames be my light,

that will guide me to loved ones, who have passed through my life.

And they lingered a moment, blessed me with a smile,

but who went on to leave me, on this Earth for a while.

Yet, I will soon join them, so I need not a grave.

No prayers and no flowers, no grieving this way…..

When my body’s consumed, and only ashes remain,

the only reminder, I leave is my name.

So I do not need a gravestone, to announce when I die,

that I’ve lived out my life, now at rest, here I lie.

No plaque, or no flagstone, no monument asked.

Just scatter my ashes, I once was here, now I’ve passed.

Let the wind, take those ashes, let the breeze be my hearse,

but please, bury me not, in that deep, damp earth.

Oh this is a very heartfelt and moving poem my friend full of sadness and sorrow. This is something that we all have to consider but mostly put it to the back of our minds. Very touching words indeed……Richard

Thank you for your comment, Richard. This was inspired by seeing an elderly lady, weeping her heart out over a deceased loved one. Cemeteries can be peaceful, lovely places to wander through….but to see that sorrow was heartbreaking, and never what her loved one would have wanted….This is only my own take on how I see things, but I hope that this poem, also inspires hope and light…All energy just changes form…as do we…
