To my dear friend Joshua.

Burying Joshua

It’d been a long time since I’d seen you,
but never long enough.
The years had eaten away your face,
and changed you far too much.

You had a million lines in your skin
that I’d never seen before.
You walked with an aged gait,
eyes always shifting back and forth.

Your body seemed much older
than time said you should be,
and I wondered what you’d done
to grow so far away from me.

And when you emptied out your pockets,
I knew you’d been on a downward turn.
There’s only so much you can do
before that need starts to burn.

Didn’t you read the warning labels
before you stepped in the trap?
You’ve got poison in your blood now,
and there’s no going back.

You swore on your life that you’d never use again,
and now I’m here, burying an old friend.
