What it was like to be of Japanese ancestry in Canada during WWII.
Image via Wikipedia
I am Japanese
I was born in Canada
After Pearl Harbor was attacked they rounded us up
Every man of Japanese ancestry
They left our wives and children and mothers without help or support
I am Japanese
I am a protestor
I am angry and separated from my family
I helped to organize a small protest group
We tried to convince the government to evacuate us with our families
We protested in front of the Vancouver immigration building
I am a protestor
I am a Prisoner of War
A POW in my own country
I am confused
What have I done?
I am a Prisoner of War
I am a POW in my own country
I live in a camp with German, Italian, and Japanese POWs
Both military and civilian
I am treated poorly by my fellow Canadians
Even though I have done nothing
Guards fire shots into our quarters
The Geneva Convention violated
I am a POW in my own country
I am a proud Canadian
I have gotten myself a job and worked hard
Even though the government turned its back to me
I am proud to be a Canadian
