The recent earthquake in Haiti serves to remind me of all that’s wrong in the world – poverty, hunger, disease, war and the rest. The thought makes a cold day even colder.

The mist rolls in over remnants of snow

A chilling fog that serves to compound my woe

And I have been harboring feelings of dread

It’s frightening the things that go through my head

I see famine and pestilence on a grand scale

Children thrown into the belly of the whale

What have they done to deserve such a plight?

That their lives should become a cold endless night

An in that land is war, destruction and death

Young soldiers lay wounded and gasping for breath

Fighting a war based upon a false premise

Those who have sent them walk away without blemish

I look once more and disaster has struck

Mother Nature’s wrath once again runs amuck

People screaming for assistance that never arrives

Because their governments clearly don’t value their lives

As the sun parts the clouds to brighten the gray

One would think dismal images would be held at bay

But now they are simply flashed on the TV

Our sick sad world displayed for all to see

The more things change the more they stay the same.

Too bad for Haiti. It began with hate and hit a place which sounds like it. The lines are well crafted and the disasters just completed the rest. Great job, Andrea.

I can feel this poem. It’s really sad but it’s also a wake up call to the world to help. Well done Andrea :)

    Haiti
    The ways of nature
    You call God
    Are unique
    The order of cycles
    No man can change
    Not a bit
    Neither you nor I
    Nor God.

    Times change and return
    People change
    All the time
    At the end nothing remains
    But times
    Still continue
    To change

i know…it seems fairly ridiculous that some people can boast about having a strong army and send so many innocent people out there to die just to make their leaders look good. great poem, strong feelings

Each country should learn how to protect the eco-system to avoid such disasters.

This is why I subscribed to you. It is hard to fathom the agony taking place in Haiti from the comfort of my living room coach. Appreciate the write and definitely “liked”.

The sad part is that Haiti has always been in this condition; the Earthquake removes the mask.
