Some key facts about one of England’s most famous women poets.

Christina Rossetti was an English poet who wrote lots of poems, about lots of different themes. Her most famous poem was Goblin Market.

·        She was born 5th December 1830, in London.

·        She had two brothers and a sister and her father was actually an Italian poem.

·        When she was 14 she suffered from mental problems and left school.

·        In her teen years she, her mother and sister became Anglo Catholics.

·        In her late teens she was engaged to a painter called James Collinson however their engagement ended because he was a Catholic. This was also the reason for her breaking up with Charles Cayley, later in her life.

·        Rossetti published her first poem when she was 18 it was published in the athenaeum magazine. She received lots of praise for this poem.

·        The poem she wrote was called Goblin Market and it was one of her most famous poems. Although it seemed like a simple poem, it highlighted temptation to sin, in Victorian lives.

·        She later wrote a Christmas poem, entitled “In the Bleak Midwinter”, this poem became famous after her death mainly, as it was used by composers as a Christmas carol.

·        Throughout her life she wrote poems however she changed the target of her poem, as she started writing children’s poetry.

·        Also she helped in a local charity, helping women get back on track with their lives.

·        Although she did write for children, she did write many feminist’s poems and she was opposed to suffering of all kinds, slavery, war and cruelty to animals.

·        In her later life she suffered from Graves’s disease.

·        In 1893 she got cancer and she died on the 29th December 1894, she was buried in Highgate Cemetery.

·        Rossetti especially became popular after the 1970’s, as feminist scholars began discovering and talking about her work.
