I wrote this poem for my son’s third birthday. It’s an appreciation of the time we are given on this Earth, as compared to the usual fade of gold heard in other poems.
When the sun started breaking
on my horizon I slept,
while dreaming of breakfast
and lying in bed.
As Apollo raced his per diem path,
I never once pondered Chronos’ wrath,
I understood time as a cruel master,
But only from his continual sequester
Of beauty and life of those we adore
This paradigm, briefly, was left alone.
Then came the day when another star shone,
Brighter than Helios, argent the glow,
I took false convictions, casting aside,
an older belief which I was supplied.
A brutal Chronos abruptly became
the giver of light in an umbral domain.
Typically praise comes as the sun sets,
Lacking certainty have me pay off this debt
To acknowledge the work done on this day,
when three years ago, began a new age.
