Memories of a broken heart. Who hasn’t been there?

Close your eyes, can you see me-
as I go through my day?
Can you see how hard I try
Can you see me when I cry?

Close your eyes, can you see me
as I go my own way?
Is there pain on my face
When I’m alone in my own place?

Close your eyes, can you see me
As I go through my nights?
Lying awake with you on my mind
And your arms I cannot find?

Close your eyes, can you see me
As I go through life?
Where no one walks beside me
There’s no future for me to see?

Close your eyes, imagine
My fingers trace the numbers?
When I pick up the phone
When I hang up wondering if you’re home?

Close your eyes, can you see
Me type in your name?
Can you see the words I write
Before I hit delete?

Close your eyes, look on my heart
Is there a hole there?
Can you see the empty ache
Did you see it break?

Close your eyes, see inside my dream
Can you see when we met?
Is there castles and covered bridges
And lighthouses on the ridges?

Close your eyes, can you feel
the hurt you gave to me?
Do you know that I knew all the little lies
And saw the deceit in your eyes?
Close your eyes, can you see
How you justified it to yourself?
When you decided to fall out of love with me
So you could live fancy-free?

Close your eyes, can you see
Their pictures and their gifts?
Can you see I knew their faces
And all your hiding places

Close your eyes, do you see me
When you come in the door?
See little notes of long ago
Remember “I love you” in the snow?

Close your eyes–
One more time can you lie real still
Can you feel me breathe
Do you see me when you dream?

    Dear Mary,

This was absolutely lovely, heartbreaking – yet beautiful. Wonderful. Your writing is in a class of it’s own – timeless beauty.

    Best wishes.

    Sincerely,

    -Liane Schmidt.

Hey Mary. This was so nice. Heartbreaking, and oh so close to what we’ve all shared in one relationship or another. As Josey I agree we all found ourselves attempting to write or call and then realized it was wise not to. Good work.
