A poem written on the north coast of Cornwall.
At home I seldom notice the sky.
My view is obscured by buildings
And the fussy furniture of urban sprawl.
With no room for vision
I forget to lift my eyes to the sky.
It is remote, fragmented, unreachable.
Light diminishes the night; no stars now
Just impenetrable fear.
Here on the edge, the sky engulfs me.
It reaches down to dance on the sea
It caresses the cliffs and dances
Across the windswept fields.
I could run to the top of the cliff
And reach up to the clouds as they glide along.
Night enriches the sky; sunsets then stars
Draw the eye heavenward.
