This is a poem about a boy called Clancy Brown who gets into all sorts of mischief when he doesn’t take the advice of his grandfather.

Clumsy Clancy

He lives with his Mum that Clancy Brown

In a town called Halley, a funny little town

With big old buildings beside the sea

And water views for breakfast, dinner and tea

Clancy just loved to sit

Beside the sea and roam a bit

As he did he was always prone

To accidents if he was too far away from home!

One day Clancy’s, mother said

Do you want to go to Granddads for a rest?

Clancy nodded he was fairly keen

So she asked Granddad to keep Clancy’s nose clean

Granddad had offered in good faith

To have the boy and teach him grace

So upended and with no loss of face

His mum packed his bags and sent him to stay!

Clancy arrived with bags in tow

He didn’t hesitate but he was slow

Granddad had it nice or so it was said

Until the time Clancy got ready for bed

He tripped over the dog and shouted ‘Eeek!’

Said Granddad ‘look you’ve spilled my tea!’

‘I’m sorry’ Clancy said with a gulp and a grimace

‘I’ll get a cloth and to mop up the mess

He turned around to do this and fell

And when he did, he gave a yell

Over his train and under the gram

And up flipped a jar of jam!

The contents emptied in midair

And landed on the cat who was in the chair

The jar of course kept on going

Until it landed

In the sand in the fish tank which was on a stand.

‘Oh No’ shouted Granddad, his hands on his face now

‘When will we correct this and how?’

‘What can I use to get it out of there?

I need some gloves and I haven’t a pair’

‘That’s ok’ said Clancy ‘I’ll do it without’

‘You won’t’ said Granddad, there are Puffer Fish about

‘Why can’t I?’ said Clancy with a little grin

‘Oh no.’ Said Granddad ‘the fish will prick your skin’

‘Look at their spines, pay attention, they’re ready to sting.’

Meanwhile the cat struggled to get itself clear

Of the sticky jam, oh dear
