This is a poem about a boy called Clancy Brown who gets into all sorts of mischief when he doesn’t take the advice of his grandfather.

He rolled on the best carpet rubbing his back

‘I think right now,’ said Granddad ‘I’ll give him a bath

But all the while his Granddad was doing this

Clancy wanted to take the risk

To get the jam jar out from the Puffer Fish pit!

A net he used by scooping it in

‘Steady, more to the right’ he said ‘to get the jar in’

But just then when he’d got it right

A fish jumped out of the water

And gave him a bite!

While Clancy drew back in horror and fright

On the end of his nose the fish held on tight

‘What’s all this noise?’ his Grandfather returned

‘Ah I see now you have got your fingers burned’

He said it because he could see that

Without looking or checking the facts

That Clancy would risk

Getting his hands stung by the Puffer fish

So no sympathy did he show

He shook his head and Clancy hung his low

While all this was going on

The cat was watching and had an idea

He’d have a snack, a very quick one

‘Ok, if I just jump from here!’

Clancy saw him a-flying toward him

And nearly jumped out of his skin

He stood there his mouth wide aghast

His life flashed before him, it would be his last

Granddad reached out and grabbed the cat

‘Now I can see where you’re at

You’re in real trouble this time aren’t you?’

‘Yes’ agreed Clancy ‘I’ve been a fool’

Granddad pulled out some extra large tweezers

And removed the fish applying some squeezes

With ‘ooh’s’ and ‘ouch’s’ and an ‘oh, thank you!’

His nose was red as a tomato and in places, blue!

Without any tenseness or ire

He said ‘I bet your nose is on fire’

‘Clancy if you will excuse me,

I would like another cup of tea.’

After that he went to bed

Looking at Clancy and shaking his head.

And as for Clancy, he had a little think

From tears and frustration, out from the drink

Rain rattled his window, but what had he learned

From this sore nose, that he had earned?

There was one thing for sure, that he would do

Heed advice from his Granddad, gladly too!
