The misadventures of a big Hippo, an almost blind Eel, and a klutzy Elephant.
Down in the bog, in swampy fog, in the middle of the Congo…
Where everything is wild and mean, and wise men seldom go…
Where sun can’t bore to forest’s floor, and everything is dark…
Lived the hippo and the eel. Where there’s eels, there’s sparks!
That hippo was so big you know. Could just lumber to and fro.
He didn’t care if you were there…or where he plopped his toes.
He had a feel for that old eel, when they’d venture out in darkness.
Eel lit the way with his light rays from voltage he had harnessed.
Well, that eel swam far and near, with hippo close behind…
You’d be amused, this unlikely truce…you’d never expect to find.
Gee, the eel could hardly see, from electricity passing through.
Hippo’s strength was known at length, if ‘gaters were bumped into.
That eel’s light was beacon bright. It really lit their way.
But, as hippo came to know, there could be heck to pay,
If he should doze, get up too close, and step on the eel’s tail…
Eel, not amused, turned up the juice. My! Hear the hippo wail!
So…they toured along together. In that murky swamp they swam.
Going nowhere, and getting there. Making time as best they can.
Eel, he eased ‘tween four grey trees (?) in the water up ahead.
Hippo, you know, was a bit too slow. He got a surprise instead!
Hippo squeezed ‘twixt elephant’s knees, the roof came crashing down!
He’s squished to slush in swampy mush. Now, nowhere to be found!
Now, that elephant, not too elegant, was embarrassed beyond repair…
He lumbered off with a disgusted scoff. Left eel just sitting there…
Well…there’s a moral to this morass. At least I hope there is…
Though you light the way with your bright ray, something can go amiss!
If others take sight on your silly light, and follow along behind you,
Make sure there’s room for both of you. (And, elephants are klutzy, too.)
