We should care why?
Corey Haim Dead At 38.
My wife told me as we were eating breakfast this morning that Corey Haim died. I asked if it was drugs (big shocker there), she said of course, and my 10 year old wanted to know who Corey Haim was. I tried to tell her, but titles like The Lost Boys, Lucas, and Licensed To Drive fell onto deaf ears. I had to cite Goonies to make her realize who his other half, Corey Feldman, is.
There’s a reason she didn’t know who he was; he has been culturally obsolete since what? 1989? In fact, we have heard about Corey Haim on just two occasions; when Corey Feldman flirted with fame a few years back on one of those ridiculous reality shows, and when he went into treatment for the drug addiction that finally got him. (although he did also pop up for a minute the second time he checked in. And the third. And fourth…. yeah, you get the picture. Fifteen times in all.
But now he managed to drug himself into oblivion, and off we go on the customary sainting of the deceased former celebrities. Is it sad that he died? Of course. But this is the same old story. Famous kid, world on a tray, no time to save money, decades of drug addiction. It isn’t even original. While some of us out here struggle to pay our mortgages, and sodiers give their lives daily for (apparently) our right to live in a country where something as insignificant as a drug addict who burned through his 15 minutes with nothing to show for it constitutes a big deal.
Its sad, yes. But nothing I’ll lose any sleep over. I like Lost Boys as much as anyone. But Corey Haim was a dope fiend and a bum. No sympathy here for him.
