This is a true story that happened soon after I was married. Hazel and I were childhood friends and still are today, although I rarely see her anymore. Hazel was determined not to go to the hospital to have her baby. I helped by spending the day with her. Later that night she had the baby, with the help of her mother, my mother and a neighbor lady. The doctor came but it was after baby Linda was born. Mother and baby were fine.

Women are courageous. Strong and brave
Move over men. We will have our say
As this truthful story goes to show
A girlfriend of my youth years ago

I went to visit one April day
We sat in the swing all chatty and gay
Suddenly she stiffened and uttered a sigh
I asked, what is the matter? Is it babies time

Hazel answered. Please don’t tell a soul
All day I have wanted to let you know
I have had to keep right on my toes
Now you are here, please stay close

They know how we chatter and giggle all day
They won’t be the wiser as long as you stay
She held my hand. Squeezed it black and blue
Her mama called out. It’s such a treat

To see you girls so happy and sweet
Hazel held my hand and softly moaned
Till dark closed in and I had to go home
I lay open eyed all the night long

Mama burst in the first crack of dawn
Get up sleepy head, you’ll never guess
What happened last night while you lay abed
Hazel went into labor. It happened so fast

Dock went for the doctor but the time was past
Her mama sent Billy to get Willie Brown
She barely got there when the baby crowned
I never knew of a first one coming so fast

That little baby girl is pretty as a rose
Soft wavy hair, cute button nose
Go on my girl. See for yourself
I hope when it’s your time you’ll do as well

Such a triumphant look in her eyes
As I approached Hazel’s bed,
My face wreathed in smiles
We pulled it off girl friend .She said
No callow man around my birthing bed.
